Culture is the agent, the natural area is the medium, the cultural landscape is the result. Under the influence of a given culture, itself changing through time, the landscape undergoes development, psing through phes, and probably reaching ultimately the end of its cycle of development.'1 In this context the term 'culture' can be interpreted in a very broad sense, it includes all Dr. Thom Ott is an sistant professor at the Department of Geography at the University of Mannheim, holds a degree in Applied Geography. His research interests and projects include urban and population geography, , North America, the European Union and Scandinavia. His thesis dealt with the postsocialist transition of the city of Erfurt (Thuringia). He is currently preparing a postdocral thesis on the urban development of Vancouver, B.C. and Seattle. Frank Swiaczny h completed his Diploma in applied geography at the Department of Geography at the University of Mannheim.
