TY - JOUR AU - Loevinger, Jane AB - Two attempts to measure personality are described. The Family Problems Scale used paired-choice items to assess personality characteristics of women. Statistical clusters of items did not confirm the existence of traits in popular and clinical usage but revealed a pervasive variable, Authoritarian Family Ideology (AFZ). A Sentence Completion Test was used to determine if AFZ is part of a broader faculty, ego development. Its scoring manual aims to justify every response rating empirically and theoretically. Every response, even if irrelevant to ego development, is rated. An internal consistency method led to discoveries about personality, revising and enriching stage definitions. This method contrasts with neo-Piagetian methods, in which stages are logically defined by their approach to an ideal end-point, and with traditional psychometric procedures. Conformity and conscientiousness appear as stages of ego development rather than as polar variables.
