TY - JOUR AU - Babey, Susan H. AB - The purpose of the present chapter is to review the empirical research on gender and global self-esteem. Two influential qualitative reviews of this literature appeared approximately 20 years ago, and their conclusions have held authoritative status in the field for two decades (E. E. Maccoby and C. N. Jacklin, 1974; R. C. Wylie, 1979). Since then, despite the appearance of an enormous number of new articles on this topic, no new comprehensive review of this literature has been undertaken. This is due, in part, to the enormity of the task. The current paper presents a meta-analysis of 10 years of empirical research on gender and global self-esteem.
