Even within the sociology of education, where his influence has been most consistently exerted, Bernstein is known to many in a fragmentary and confused manner. The appearance of this collection of essays will, one hopes, prompt renewed appreciation and appraisal of Bernstein's contribution and encourage a systematic understanding of his sociological project. It is the fourth volume of the 'Class, Codes and Control' series that began in 1971. Apart from a revised edition in the interim, the last volume appeared in 1975. The first three volumes contained papers that articulated the two best known areas of theory and research: the controversial work on language codes, and the no less original reflections on the classification and framing of educational knowledge. Since then Bernstein has been rather less visible in print.
