TY - JOUR AU - Rich, Grant Jewell AB - P Grant J ositive Psychology: ewell Rich An Introduction POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY: AN INTRODUCTION GRANT JEWELL RICH teaches a variety of psychology courses at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, including creativity, methods, and health psy chology. He is currently editing a book on massage therapy research to be published by Harcourt/Churchill Livingstone. He maintains an interest in anthropology and is guest editing a forthcoming special issue of the AAA journal Anthropology of Consciousness on body and consciousness. His popular writing has appeared in Psychology Today, Skeptical Inquirer, and Massage Therapy Journal. His academic writing has focused on a variety of topics, including peak experience, music, culture, and adolescence. The focus of this special issue of the Journal of Humanistic Psy- chology (JHP) is positive psychology, a “science of positive subjec- tive experience, positive traits, and positive institutions” (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). Positive psychology is cur- rently the focus of considerable attention within the American Psychological Association (APA). For instance, the field was the focus of a recent special issue of the APA journal, American Psy- chologist (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000), and a special sec- tion of the same journal is to be devoted to positive psychology in early 2001.
