TY - JOUR AB - A SURVEY of owners' reasons for having their car engines overhauled was recently made in the U.S.A., and a large number of engines ranging from 1934 to 1939 models was inspected immediately upon disassembly and before damaged parts or deposits were removed. The results of this work were given recently in a paper Tailoring Lubricating Oils to Fit Service Requirements by J. A. Miller California Research Corporation and B. M. Berry Standard Oil Co. of California at a Society of Automobile Engineers meeting. It was shown that 63 per cent of engines inspected were being overhauled because oil consumption was excessive and 29 per cent because of mechanical failures. Of the 63 per cent, over half were being repaired because of high oil consumption only and the remainder because of this plus some other cause of engine malfunctioning. Oil ring clogging was observed in excess of 50 per cent of engines, as also was cylinder taper in excess of 0.010 in.
