TY - JOUR AU1 - VANBESELCAERE, NORBERT AB - Book review Social Identity Theory: Constructive and Critical Advances. Edited by D. Abrarns & M. A. Hogg. London: Harvester Wheatsheaf, 1990. Social [deniity Theory: Coristrrrctivem d Critical Aduances is an edited book in which Abrams & Hogg attempt to give an overview of what they consider to be the most promising recent developments with respect to the social identity approach to group processes. In this sense, this book constitutes a continuation of their earIier book (Hogg & Abrams, 1988) in which they described the development of social identity theory, its later elaborations and its applications to a wide range of social psychological topics. O n the basis of this overview, they formulated a number of issues and questions that were presented as giving important directions for the further development of the social identity approach. These suggestions seem to have guided the selection of rhc topics presented in their new book. The book contains three blocks of four chapters each. In the first block, the evidence and the problems with respect to the basic processes postulated by social identity theory are reviewed. These basic processes are of two kinds, i.e. (cognitive) categorization processes and (motivational) self-enhancement processes.
