I was not however convinced that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. Tim Cawkwell Norwich Holiness: Past and Present, ed. Stephen C. Barton (T. & T. Clark 2003), 511 pp, £70.00 hbk; £25.00 pbk This is a wonderful and immensely helpful book. Of course, like all collections of papers given at different times, it is uneven. But there is material here which will be of great value at many levels. Originating in lectures given at the Durham Centre for Theological Research in 1999 and 2000, the book is divided into four parts, dealing with the theory of holiness, biblical material, historical reflections on the Christian tradition, and contemporary issues. I found the biblical studies particularly valuable. John Rogerson combines a summary of much biblical material with a survey of the interpretation of holiness from Schleiermacher via Otto to Nathan Soderblom.
