MCCURDY A. INTRODUCTION The rde of motivational factors in the determination of CR2 behavior has recently received greatly increased attention, both ex- perimental and theoretical. The salivary CR is of particular sig- nificance in this connection for two reasons. It was on the basis of data from this response that the Pavlovian set of CR principles, long dominant in conditioning theory, was originally formulated. And the behavior itself is well adapted to an analysis of the r61e of the motivational factor in that the latter may be unambiguously specified (hunger), conveniently manipulated, and varied quite inde- pendently of the US (food). In these respects it is distinctly superior for the purpose to most of the more “reflex” like responses utilized experimentally, and to all withdrawal behavior. Experiments by one of the writers reported elsewhere (28, 29, 30) and by others (4, 16, 21, 25) show that after acquisition, the magnitude TI - Analysis of Motivational Factors in Conditioned Behavior: I.
