AB - Beyond Cholesterol, written by Peter Kwiterovich, MD, director of the Lipid Research Clinic at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, is an exceedingly timely—in fact, almost indispensable— guide for all readers. While addressed to patients, it contains so much justification for its title that it may be considered required reading for physicians who are not themselves at the forefront of lipid research. While Thomas J. Moore ("The Cholesterol Myth," Atlantic, September 1989 [see previous review]) and others have limited their discussions to total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, Kwiterovich leads readers into, inter alia, hypoHDL and hyperapoB as explanations for why people with low total cholesterol levels may experience the tragedies of myocardial infarction.
