Gutiérrez Jolynn Asato Maria Santos Neil Gotanda Backlash Pedagogy: Language and Culture and the Politics of Reform We begin our thoughts about language and education in the twenty-first century by contextualizing them in a paraphrase of Winston Churchill’s famous remarks about Russia: . . . race relations in America [is a] riddle wrapped in a quandary hidden inside a history. We do not fool ourselves into thinking we have solved the riddle. But we do hope we can move our nation a little bit closer to under - standing it” (Steinhorn and Diggs-Brown, 1999, p. xviii). Our intention, as well, is to move our nation a little bit closer to understanding the possibilities that grow from a democratic edu- cation. In this article, we focus on an educational trend we label backlash pedagogy that threatens the possibility of educational achievement and intellectual and social equity for large num- bers of public school students. Susan Faludi (1991) popularized the notion of backlash in her analysis of the war against women.
