This resulted in a recombination event producing a virulent virus that wiped out 90% of the chimpanzee population over the next 100 000 years. In around 1900 the first transmission events of this virus to humans occurred; over the next 80 years the virus produced mini‐epidemics that flared and faded until, in the late 1970s, the epidemic gained momentum and rapidly assumed the proportion of a pandemic. Such a set of events reinforces the evolutionary view of biologist Richard Dawkins that an event which is possible will always occur eventually. Following recognition of the epidemic, scientists rapidly found the underlying cause: HIV. In a remarkable introduction to this book the two leaders in this field, Gallo and Montagnier, have written a joint preface. Over the last 30 years we have gained unique insights into the structure and replication machinery of this virus, which has allowed a large number of drugs to be developed that can attack viral TI - A Decade of HAART: The Development and Global Impact of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy JF - Hiv Medicine DO - 10.1111/j.1468-1293.2009.00726.x DA - 2009-08-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/wiley/a-decade-of-haart-the-development-and-global-impact-of-highly-active-lvadAuHRe0 SP - 458 VL - 10 IS - 7 DP - DeepDyve ER -
