TY - JOUR AU - WATKINS, C. EDWARD AB - The psychotherapy supervision literature has generally focused on the growth and development of supervisees. Very little attention has been given to the growth and development of psychotherapy supervisors themselves. This reflects a gap in the supervision literature. A four-stage model of psychotherapy supervisor development is proposed. The four stages of the model—role shock, role recovery and transition, role consolidation, and role mastery—are described. The theoretical/conceptual, research, and practical implications of the model are briefly examined.
