TY - JOUR AB - r. VII. ADDENDUM Two ecologicallyoriented papers on irradiation of springtails have appeared recently. Cavalloro & Delrio (1971) exposed wild-caught Hypogastrura meridionalis Steiner to ~ C y-rays, using 1000insects for each dose and nine different doses. Their graph O indicated that median survival time, about IS&days in the controls, increased slightly after 10 or 20 krad, and then decreased progressively as a function of dose, leaching 3 days after 250 krad. Their tabulated data can also be analysed in terms of distribution Causes o death in irradiated adult insects f of deaths as a function of time after irradiation, however. If this is done, it is apparent that mortality rates after 50 or IOO krad began to increase on day 10, reaching a peak about day 14,whereas mortality rates after lower doses and in controls began to rise on day 10, reached a lower and much broader peak about day 20;mortality rates but after 150 krad rose sharply about day 6. Thus these data not only demonstrate increased median life-span after ‘low’ doses of ionizing radiation, but are in keeping with the concept of a specific sequence of events leading to death about 2 weeks after irradiation with ‘moderate’ TI - ADDENDUM JF - Biological Reviews DO - 10.1111/j.1469-185X.1972.tb00974.x DA - 1972-05-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/wiley/addendum-tSThhviCHB SP - 238 VL - 47 IS - 2 DP - DeepDyve ER -
