JOURNAL OF POLYMER SCIENCE | PART A VOL 53 NO 4 15 FEBRUARY 2015 WWW.POLYMERCHEMISTRY.ORG WWW.POLYMERCHEMISTRY.ORG HYDROGELS The surface polyion complex gel (sPIC gel), a chemically bonded nonionic gel moiety, is prepared with N-vinylacetamide, N-vinylformamide, and vinyl phosphonic acid. The large picture shows the shrinking gel moiety surrounded by swollen gel moiety. On page 562, Hiroharu Ajiro, Kazuya Takemura, and Mitsuru Akashi report the solubility dif- ference of poly(N-vinyl amide)s with water and isopropanol is used for the selective hy- drolysis of surface portion of the poly(N-vinyl amide)s gel. After the hydrolysis, vinyl phosphonic acid is polymerized in the partially hydrolyzed gel, which produces the sPIC gel. Based on pH responsivity, the release of the model drug is controlled by polyion complex formation on the surface on the sPIC gel. NONVOLATILE MEMORY On page 602, Lei Dong, Han-Sheng Sun, Jau-Tzeng Wang, Wen-Ya Lee, and Wen-Chang Chen demonstrate novel fluorene based donor-acceptor polyimides as charge storage layer (electret) and use pentacene as a charge transport layer for nonvolatile memory device applications. The polyimides consist of an electron-donating fluorene diamine moiety and neutral or electron-accepting moieties. The image shows the formation of pentacene crystals on the fluorene-based donor-acceptor polyimides. The polyimide
