It is not known, however, whether transmitter substance formed in the cell. body reaches the nerve terminals in sufficient quantity to contribute to the economy the material there to be d by nerve impulses. Recently, Eisenstadt, (28) developed a technique for injecting radioactive substances into single s ApEysia. They found that following the injection choline-3H into the cell body the giant cholinergic , R2, acetylcholine-3H was rapidly formed in the cell body; at 15°C the newly synthesized acetylcholine was transported down the axon at a rate 17 mm/day. Using this method, we have examined the possibility that acetylcholine, formed in the cell body, is transported to the nerve terminals d there by nerve impulses.
