Winnicott and labor’s eclipse of life – Work is where we start from

Winnicott and labor’s eclipse of life – Work is where we start from Psychodynamic Practice, 2024 Vol. 00, No. 00, 1–5 BOOK REVIEW Winnicott and labor’s eclipse of life – Work is where we start from, by Nathan Gerard, New York, Routledge, 2024, 93 pp., £125 (hb), £37 (pb), ISBN: 978-1-032-50539-8 This slim volume belies its depth, drilling down into key theories of D.W. Winnicott (and others) in intricate detail. As referenced in the title, Gerard riffs on Winnicott’s collection of papers ‘Home is Where We Start From’ to argue that, in the current work-heavy environment of neoliberalism (Silvers, 2023), work is in fact where we start from (in terms of how much it defines and affects our sense of self and influences our home lives). Prior knowledge of ‘the impoverished environment of neoliberalism’ (p.18) is assumed, but this reader’s grasp of economic terminology is fairly basic and needed clarification. Via a fascinating lecture at UCL I found on YouTube, I learned that neoliberalism took hold in the 1980s and is strongly associated with the Thatcher and Reagan years. It involved the dismantling of power from public to private institutions and signalled a move from ‘community’ to the ‘individual’.
