HEALTH HAZARDS OF VDT’s, Brian Pearce (Ed.), Wiley, Chichester, 1984. No. of pages: 244. Price: f16.50. At the outset it is worth noting that by the end of the text the question mark still remains. This book is a collection of 19 papers grouped under three broad heads presented at a conference on the theme organized by the Human Sciences and Advanced Technology Research Group (HUSAT) at Loughborough University of Technology (U.K.). In addition to the papers the text incorporates a well-structured report of the general discussion which followed each of the three sessions. One suspects from these discussion pieces that the topic and/or the papers provoked some heated debate. Some conflict of views was perhaps predictable given one trade unionist’s view contained in her formal presentation to the effect that . . . the introduction of the experts into this discussion has not been particularly helpful and many contributions indicate an appalling ignorance of the authority structures in most workplaces. In Pearce’s own contribution relating to Trade Unions and Ergornic Problems he adopts a quite different perspective arguing that many ‘new technology agreements’ are based on little scientific substance but rather reflect the consequences of crude management
