While there have been numerous studies that have explored Sino-Japanese controversies and the “history problem,” the novelty of the author’s approach lies in her analytical framework, which “build[s] upon the existing body of literature on the various war-related problems in Sino- Japanese relations” but “consider[s] them within an overarching framework of reconciliation” (p. 10). Unlike conventional studies, which analyze the reasons for historical controversies between the two states, the author goes further by exploring “the ways in which the governments and peoples have attempted to resolve the issues, considering the successes and failures” (p. 10). The analytical lens of “reconciliation” is clearly outlined in chapter one, and the framework permeates and informs the case studies throughout.
