Martin Luther (1483–1546) I eat what I like and suffer thereafter Martin Luther's health, from both a somatic and psychiatric aspect, has been discussed intensively by psychiatrists and clinicians over the years. Obviously, Luther had a complex psychiatric history with neuroticism and probably a manodepressive condition. He also had a massive somatic history. Martin Luther was born in 1483 in Eisleben in Germany and then studied in Erfurt from 1501. He admitted himself that he enjoyed the life of a student more than the studies themselves and engaged heavily in eating and drinking. Martin Luther called the university in Erfurt ‘a pub and a brothel’. Every day he was woken up at 4 o'clock for a day filled with ‘mechanical learning and tiring spiritual exercises’. During his academic studies, Luther was taught to be critical even towards the greatest philosophers and to test matters through his own experience. Luther never accepted that common sense might be a way to lead man to God and resisted the concept that the Bible was the tool for spiritual development.
