An American Guide to Working With Chinese Managers: Enhancing Effectiveness Through Cultural... There is a growing need for understanding the dynamics of side-by-side work between Chinese and American managers. There is a general understanding of the characteristics of Chinese culture, and there is a generic profile of success for American expatriates in different cultures. In this article, I discuss specific cultural differences between managers in the United States and China, including the impact of Confucian philosophy on Chinese management, the typical characteristics of Chinese managers as a group, and some practical advice for American expatriates in China. Both American and Chinese managers must be aware and acutely accommodative of differences in thinking and management inherent in each of their respective cultures. Abstract

There is a growing need for understanding the dynamics of side-by-side work between Chinese and American managers. There is a general understanding of the characteristics of Chinese culture, and there is a generic profile of success for American expatriates in different cultures. In this article, I discuss specific cultural differences between managers in the United States and China, including the impact of Confucian philosophy on Chinese management, the typical characteristics of Chinese managers as a group, and some practical advice for American expatriates in China. Both American and Chinese managers must be aware and acutely accommodative of differences in thinking and management inherent in each of their respective cultures. The concept of balance, which is a thread in Confucian teaching, also is advisable for American managers to understand in order to improve their management effectiveness in China.
