Social environment as a mediator of classroom learning

Social environment as a mediator of classroom learning 6 posttests were canonically correlated with 14 environment scales derived from student ratings from 144 high school physics classes. The 1st statistically significant canonical variate loaded positively on the difficulty scale and predicted cognitive posttests. The 2nd loaded positively on satisfaction and negatively on friction, apathy, and cliqueness and predicted affective and behavioral posttests. 2 variates also predicted significant and substantial variance in the posttests and residual gains after partialing out the variance of IQ and initial physics achievement and interest in physical science.
