The cultural background of personality
A method for measuring the college environment, the Environmental Assessment Technique (EAT), was described. Measures of 8 characteristics of the student body––its size, average intelligence, and 6 "personal orientations"––were validated against the College Characteristics Index at 36 colleges. The 6 personal orientations, which were obtained from a census of students' major fields at each institution, were also shown to be highly stable over time. Some of the advantages, limitations, and possible applications of the EAT were discussed.
