Black sexual politics: African Americans, gender, and the new racism

Black sexual politics: African Americans, gender, and the new racism Culture, Health & Sexuality, 2014 Vol. 16, No. 3, 331–336 BOOK REVIEWS Black sexual politics: African Americans, gender, and the new racism, by Patricia Hill Collins, New York, Routledge, 2005, 374 pp., US$36.77 (paperback), ISBN 0-415-95150-X In Black sexual politics: African Americans, gender and the new racism, Patricia Hill Collins uses her background in sociology, critical theory and feminism to challenge the idea of monolithic identities in the lives of African Americans. Collins opens a dialogue about Black gender ideology that is relevant to youth, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, college students, academics and many other disciplines and fields. She urges African Americans to be bold, creative and critical of identity variables and examines how the evolution of racism and other forms of discrimination affect the lived experiences and perceptions of African American men and women. She explores the complexity of African American identities by emphasising the multidimensional and dynamic interactions between race, gender, sexuality and class. Throughout the text, she integrates theoretical and statistical evidence, provides extensive references and supplements her discussion with examples from popular culture and media to dispel the myth that racism does not exist.
