Effects of Kinetin on Growth and Nucleic Acid Metabolism in Suspension Cultures of L. Cucumis melo Abstract At 0.05 and 0.5 mg per 1 of kinetin growth of cucumber suspension cultures were promoted and at a higher level (5.0 mg per 1) it was inhibited. Total nucleic acids and protein increased during the lag phase and declined during the phase of exponential growth. The nucleotides increased before there was any appreciable increase in the amount of supernatant ribonucleic acid. The RNA, soluble protein and ribo-nuclease activity also rose during the early period of growth and subsequently fell. Higher amounts of nucleotides, RNA and soluble protein were present at growth promoting kinetin concentrations, but these were in smaller amounts at supra-optimal kinetin levels. But the rate of decline during the period of increase in dry weight was slower compared to the rest. There was reduced activity of RNase, which also followed RNA and soluble protein in the pattern of changes during the course of culture.
