Short reviews Higher Education 27: 123-124, 1994. The Editors of The Chronicle of Higher Education (1993) The Almanac of Higher Education. Chicago & London, The University of Chicago Press. 368pp. US $21.75; s Paper. The 1993 edition of this invaluable reference book provides the usual overview of higher education in the USA together with state-by-state factual reports offering all the statistics which the interested person would wish to find. The overview section includes comment on recent Supreme Court decisions affecting education including one which ruled that it was unconstitutional for public entities to ban 'fighting words,' defined as forms of speech that inflict injury or which incite immediate violence. Some college 'hate speech' codes are being reviewed in the light of this decision whilst other colleges have decided that their existing practice meets the terms of the Court's decision. The value of this standard reference volume lies principally in its many tables, maps and diagrams. This impressive assembly of data from official sources is an essential reference tool for all who are concerned with the world's most complex and highly developed higher education system. K.
