PREFACE

PREFACE The present study is based upon investigations carried out during the period 1974-1978 in the laboratory of Medical Depart- ment PI Division of Nephrology, Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen. I am greatly indebted to Professor J0rn Hess Thaysen, dr. med., chief of staff, for the excellent working conditions, which were a prerequisite for the present work. Professor J@rn Hess Thaysen has created a stimulating, inspiring and always friendly atmosphere of Medical Department P and his kind guidance of my work together with his unwearied demand for precision and clarity has been of the outmost importance to me. J9rgen Ladefoged, dr. med., introduced me to laboratory work and clinical investigation. He has been a master teacher in these fields and he has contributed significantly to these studies during hours and hours of discussion, assistance, collaboration and advice. I wish to thank him for his most valuable help during the years. As will be apparent to the reader, Klaus Blgaard, dr. med., was my co-author during the work. In the laboratory we became close friends. I want to express my deep gratitude to him for numerous enjoyable and stimulating discussions and for fellowship during our previous and present work. Dr. Jan Heerfordt, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery U, Rigs- hospitalet, University of Copenhagen, introduced me to bone scinti- graphy. I am most grateful for good and fruitful team-work in this field. I wish to thank all members of the staff of Medical Department P for their help in carrying out the investigations. In particular I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Jytte Hartvich, laboratory technician, for skilful and patient assistance in the laboratory. I am also indebted to Lone Malling, Ingrid Fabricius, Inge-Lise Nielsen, Karen Toft and Karen Nielsen, members of the nursing staff, who assisted me in the clinical investigations and to Aase Nielsen, secretary, who typed a perfect manuscript. Finally, I wish to express my thanks to Leo Pharmaceutical Pro- ducts, Copenhagen for kind help and supply of la-hydroxyvitamin D3 and to the Danish Medical Research Foundation, the P. Carl Petersen Foundation, King Christian X's Foundation and the August Kongsted Foundation for financial support. Copenhagen, January 1980.
