APPLIED LINGUISTICS Bertil Malmberg Applied linguistics is generally looked upon äs something new and rather modern, sometimes too modern to be taken seriously. It has already been introduced äs a subject of teaching and research in several universities, and numerous books, articles, and a few periodical publications -- among them this one--have been devoted to discussing it and developing it. The first question to put when faced with this new branch--among the numerous old ones--of linguistics is if it is a science in its own rights or just practical applications, within different fields of human activity, of theories or results formulated and arrived at through scientific efforts and theoretical thinking. Isitnot, äs in many other cases (physics, physiology, etc.), so that the research worker makes his discoveries without caring for any practical consequencies and that, at a later stage, these discoveries are made useful in practical work (industry, practical medecine, etc.)? In a way, yes. It would be a commonplace to stress here that scientific research and scientific thinking äs such have nothing to do with its later practical applications.
