During this early phase the limb bud is flattened along its CELLULAR BASIS OF SKELETAL dorsoventral axis. On the basis of their study of the talpid mutant, in which the limb bud is much broader, Ede et al. GROWTH DURING DEVELOPMENT (1977) have suggested that the over-all form arises from the pattern of cell division and migration of the mesodermal cells. However, it is much more likely that the form of the limb is L WOLPERT PhD FRS determined by the ectodermal jacket.
