Multivariate analysis is used in a cross-cultural study to determine therelationship between the sexual division of labor in a number of subsistencetasks and the value of children. The results demonstrate that children'swork is affected by the adult sexual division of labor. Furthermore, thepresence of domesticated animals in a community may increase the value of children. Where large animals are present, men participate in animalhusbandry, and boys are highly valued.
