It was thus his intention, author Iwamoto Kenji declares, to reassess the experience of watching images in the dark and to write an ‘image history’ of the pictures people watched when no electricity brightened the darkness. The main title of his book – Gentō no seiki – which is also given in its English translation ‘Centuries of Magic Lanterns’ with the addendum ‘in Japan’ indicates that the book is about the history of the magic lantern in Japan, whereas the subtitle – ‘A History of Visual Culture on the Eve of Cinema’ – hints at a larger perspective. Indeed, the book focuses primarily on the magic lantern, but broadens the view and takes into consideration
