ANNOUNCEMENTS Heinz Karger Prize 1982 and 1983 The Dr. Heinz Karger Memorial Foundation invites the submission of papers on the following subjects: 1982: An original research paper on “Hypothalamc+pituitary dysregulation in psy- chiatric diseases” 1983: An original research paper or a review summarizing an author‘s personal con- tributions ta “Cellular ageing”. Conditions: Manuscripts shall not exceed 20 typewritten pages, including illustrations, tables and bibliography. Manuscripts marked “Competition” must reach the publishers, S. Karger AG, Allschwilerstrasse 10, 4009 Basle (Switzerland), not later than February 28, 1982 and 1983. The manuscript must be typewritten on one side only, double-spaced, and is to be submitted in quadruplicate, and in accordance with the instructions Contained in the “Rules for the preparation of manuscripts”. This leaflet can be obtained free of charge from the publishers if the request is marked “Competition”. Language: English, German or French. Publication: The winning paper will be published in English in one of the Karger journals. The price cames a cash award of SFr. 7000.- for the 1982 subject. In 1983, the Foundation will commemorate its 20th anniversary by granting an award of SFr. 20,000. First International Symposium on Representing Understanding will be held at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, 25-26 February 1982. Advances in computer technology, software design and mathematical modelling di- rected at data derivation, analysis and representation are giving us a wealth of new tools for representing understanding. Published studies tend to be directed towards a particular discipline or special interest group rather than across disciplines. This symposium is concerned with theoretical issues, research and techniques with cross- disciplinary applications. Papers are invited on representing understanding with relevance to: medicine; psy- chology; sociology; politics; eumomics; management; education; philosophy; mathe matics; computer science; artifxial intelligeace. Some papers will be selected for a book of the same title as the symposium. Papers should be submitted by 2 November 1981 to: E. W.
